ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Coming off its first win of the season the night before, St. Thomas volleyball fell in straight sets to Milwaukee (19-25, 14-25, 18-25) on Saturday to wrap up the Tommie Invitational in Schoenecker Arena.

RECAP
The Panthers' strong day began at the start of set one with four straight kills and a 4-0 lead. Senior Claire Ricard answered with the Tommies' first kill of the match to end the streak and was part of a block assist with sophomore Megan Wetter during the next rally to pull within two. Back-to-back blocks by the Purple tied the set then gave the home squad a 12-11 lead. Milwaukee scored five of the next six points and led for the remainder of the set win.

Both teams traded points over the first nine serves before a Panther error gave the Tommies a 6-4 lead. UWM followed with five straight points and scored eight of the final nine points to end set two.

Peterson opened set four with her third of four kills in the match, beginning four straight points traded by the Tommies and Panthers. After going down by three, St. Thomas scored three straight points to tie the set, 8-8, including a service ace by freshman Morgan Kealy. Milwaukee again pulled away toward the end of the set to secure the Tommie Invitational title.

Thoughts from head coach Thanh Pham about the inaugural Tommie Invitational Volleyball Tournament:

"Thanks to St. Thomas and the university for allowing us to host a tournament here and it was a great experience for all the competitors. Everyone came away with a win. Everyone came away with a loss. It just shows that we're in the right neighborhood as far as competition goes.

"It was fun to see all the support that the student body gave us. We couldn't be more appreciative, so thank you goes out to them. And to our team for all their efforts. Great improvements will be on their way."
