Bieleveldt’s late goal pushes Tommies to victory

9/16/2023 5:33:00 PM | Men's Soccer

Two second half goals puts the Tommies on top, 2-1

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Tommies earn their first win of the season with a 2-1 victory over the Chicago State Cougars. A quiet start to the game led to two straight second half goals to take down the Cougars of Chicago State, Saturday afternoon at South field.

Offensively, the Tommies launched 12 shots and put four on goal with two getting by Chicago State's goalkeeper Luca Fontana. Oliver Bieleveldt and Faris Colic each had a goal in the 2-1 win.

RECAP
It was a quiet start to the game, with the first half ending scoreless for both teams. The Tommies attempted five shots in the first half, while the Cougars shot six towards the goal. Tommie goalkeeper, Tucker Mann, saved all three shots in the first half, shutting down all opportunities from the Cougars.

Second half action began quickly, as the Cougars scored a goal to go up 1-0 in the 49th minute. The Tommies responded quickly when under two minutes later, Faris Colic forced turnover just outside the 18-yard box, took a touch and scored his second goal of the season to help the Tommies tie the game.

Both teams continued to battle, and in the final three minutes of play, sophomore Oliver Bieleveldt scored his second goal of the season off a corner kick. Bieleveldt's game winning goal helped the Tommies to their first win of the season in their home opener.

QUOTEABLES
Thoughts from head coach Jon Lowery after the 2-1 victory:

"Super happy for the guys in our first home game that we have been looking forward to for so long. To come back from a goal down, again, is not the position we wanted to be in, but showed some real resiliency and some real grit against the quality team in Chicago State… I'm proud of the result and most importantly, I'm really proud of this group for sticking together this first month of the season and really excited about what's to come."
