Tommies sweep Central Michigan during first match in Green Bay

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Senior outside hitter Claire Ricard and freshman setter Morgan Kealy powered the St. Thomas volleyball offense during a 3-0 sweep over Central Michigan (25-15, 25-19, 26-24) to start the Capital Credit Union Classic. The Tommies improve to 4-6 overall this season, doubling their win total from a season ago, while the Chippewas fall to 5-5 overall.
Kealy recorded 36 of the teams total 38 assists during the three-set match, putting her over 300 assists in just 10 games. Ricard led the team with 11 kills and 12.5 points, followed by sophomore outside hitter Tezra Rudzitis with 10 kills and 10 points and sophomore Megan Wetter with six kills and four block assists.

Central Michigan took an early 3-1 lead to open the match, followed quickly by a kill from Wetter to start a 9-2 run and give St. Thomas the final lead of the set. Wetter recorded three of her five set-one kills during the run, which was eventually extended to a 23-13 lead.
Set two began with three lead changes as CMU took a 10-7 advantage early. Ricard's fifth and sixth kills of the match helped the Toms deliver the final blow with a 13-3 run. St. Thomas held onto its lead with the help of three kills by both Rudzitis and freshman Ellie Gustafson for a 25-19 win.
The Tommies faced a quick 5-2 deficit that grew to five points, 10-5, to start the third set. The Purple pieced together an 11-2 run behind three kills from Ricard and two from Rudzitis to take a 16-12 advantage. CMU scored eight of the next nine points to reach the 20-point mark first, but a Central Michigan error, ace from Wetter, and kill from Gustafson helped St. Thomas scored eight of the final 11 points for the sweep win.
