St. Paul, Minn. - Redshirt sophomore Nate Raddatz and sophomore Sam May have received the All-Academic Athlete award for 2022-23 by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA).

Raddatz, a Financial Management major, is a repeat honoree. May, a Neuroscience major, and Raddatz are multiple-time university Dean's List honorees. Both met the USTFCCCA's academic gpa standard and its more difficult season performance standard in the decathlon and heptathlon as top-100 ranked athletes in those events for 2023 in Division I.

Raddatz is a two-time Summit League decathlon champion and helped the Purple take fourth place in the conference in both the indoor and outdoor seasons. He also placed fourth in the javelin at the 2023 conference outdoor meet and took sixth in the 2023 Summit indoor meet in the heptathlon. Raddatz recorded the 24th best decathlon score nationally in D-I among all freshmen and sophomores at 7,157, a mark just off the Tommies' 29-year-old school record in the school's No. 2 spot. He set personal bests set in 2023 include the javelin (192-0), 100 (11.13), 400 (51.15), 110 hurdles (15.11), discus (147-10) and pole vault (13-9 1-4). Raddatz made school history in May 2022 as he became the first St. Thomas individual conference champion of the D-I era when he won the decathlon at the Summit League outdoor meet. Raddatz' best decathlon score as a D-III freshman athlete in 2021 was 5,761. Last season he scored 6,855 before hitting this spring's 7,157 score. Raddatz' 33 career individual points in Summit League meets is the most by a Tommie so far in the D-I era.

May missed the 2023 outdoor season with an injury but was the 2023 indoor Summit League heptathlon champion and school record holder, one season after finishing seventh place in that event as a freshman. The Willmar, Minn., native became the Tommies' first Summit League indoor champ as he broke the St. Thomas program record for the heptathlon with a score of 5,189. He recorded career bests in the high jump (6-6 3-4), pole vault (14-3 1-2), 60 hurdles (8.47), long jump (22-8 1-2) and 60 dash (6.99). As a freshman in the 2022 conference outdoor meet, May placed eighth in the 10-event decathlon. May and teammate Jack Rosner placed 1-2 in the heptathlon to help lead St. Thomas to a fourth-place finish out of eight teams at the Summit League Indoor Championships in February. The Toms improved one place from their fifth-place conference indoor showing in February of 2022.

Team Awards

The St. Thomas men also were repeat honorees of the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team award for 2022-23. Coach Pete Wareham's squad compiled a 3.37 grade-point average and ranked in the top 50 of more than 190 Division I programs recognized. Tha Toms' team academic resume includes two athletes with 4.00 gpas, and 12 others with gpas above 3.55.

In season two of competition in Division I, the Purple placed fourth in both the Summit League indoor and outdoor meets. In the outdoor meet, held in Fargo, 41 of the Toms' 57 team points came from freshmen or sophomores in eligibility. In 14 of 22 events this outdoor season, the Toms improved on their best 2022 times and marks.
