LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- A dominant offensive effort led St. Thomas baseball to a 17-9 win Saturday over New Mexico State in Las Cruces, N.M., to conclude the 2023 season.

The Tommies compiled an NCAA Division I era best 22 hits, including five student-athletes who garnered at least three hits and three that totaled at least three RBI. The Purple executed with runners in scoring position, hitting 14-24 with 16 combined RBI.

Ben Vujovich recorded the team's second five-hit performance of the season, adding one RBI and four runs scored. He finished a home run shy of hitting for the cycle, totaling a single, double, and triple by the third inning.

St. Thomas got after New Mexico State early and often by leading off the game with five straight hits, including RBI singles from Brigs Richartz, Charlie Bartholomew, and Joe Roder. Richartz and Bartholomew came up with RBI singles again in the second inning before an eight-run third inning.

Seven of the Tommies' first eight batters of the third inning reached base, including six hits, with runs scoring during five straight at-bats. After leading off the game with a double and getting a single in the second inning, Vujovich hit an RBI triple followed by an RBI double by Richartz. Dylan O'Connell wrapped up scoring in the inning with an extra-base hit of his own, a two-RBI double to put the Tommies ahead 13-0.

Walker Retz (2-6) started on the mound for the Purple and took the win, throwing 6.0 innings with five hits allowed and a season high seven strikeouts. Retz struck out five of the first nine batters faced on the day and didn't allow a hit until a lead-off home run in the bottom of the fourth inning.

New Mexico State scored eight unanswered runs to pull within five before St. Thomas crossed four runs in the top of the eighth inning.

Jeremy Klick threw 1.0 inning before Bryce Leedle closed out the win over the final 2.0 frames. Both Klick and Leedle tallied two strikeouts, including the final out of the game.

St. Thomas wraps up the 2023 season with an overall record of 10-34 as it won three of its final six games overall.
