St. Paul, Minn. – The St. Thomas Softball team completed their near-perfect weekend series against Western Illinois on the back of Keira Murphy's seven shutout innings winning by a score of 6-0.
The Tommies beat the Leathernecks twice the day before (8-0 and 4-0). Pitching was on center stage in both contests. Ella Cook went six scoreless innings in game one and Isabelle True went the distance for the second complete-game shutout of the day.
Keira Murphy had a tough act to follow but the freshman hurler was up to the task. She danced through Western's lineup and allowed just three hits, four walks, and struck out a career-best five in the complete-game shutout effort.
The Tommies were held scoreless through the first four innings but grabbed three in each of the final frames.
Kaitlyn Raymond opened the scoring with her game-winning RBI double that scored Anna Caruso and placed Avery Wukawitz on third. Brooke Ellestad then got on the board and brought both Wukawitz and Raymond home on a single up the middle.
Katie Goelz kicked off the scoring in the bottom of the sixth, rocketing her third home run of the season well over the left field fence. Avery Wukawitz then doubled home Sydney Mickett and Brooke Betson, her fourth extra base hit of the three-game series.
Mickett got on base in all three of her plate appearances and stole two bases. In all, the Tommies recorded 10 hits, stole four bases, and brought around six runs in a well-rounded victory.
