Softball stretches program-best win streak to five with doubleheader sweep
4/11/2023 8:08:00 PM | Softball
St. Paul, Minn. – The St. Thomas Softball team displayed two more complete team efforts in taking down Green Bay 8-1 and 7-1 and pushing their win streak to a Division I program-best five games in a Tuesday afternoon doubleheader at South Field.
Softball is now 13-24 on the season and 3-5 in conference. This stretch has been the program's first three game win streak, four game win streak, and now five game win streak. In Coach Trotter's first year at the helm of the program the Tommies won 14 of their 50 games. They have 16 games still to play in 2023.
Game One Recap
The Tommies jumped on the Phoenix starting pitcher early and scored five runs in the very first inning. Katie Goelz singled home Kaitlyn Raymond and Brooke Ellestad to break open the inning. Kameron Monson then doubled home two more and Abbi Stierlen singled in Monson to give the Tommies a five-run cushion.
Ella Cook, the Tommies' starter, put that cushion to good use. The sophomore went all seven innings retiring seven Green Bay hitters by way of the strikeout.
Cook walked four and gave up just two hits while surrendering one earned run. She tossed her second consecutive complete game to lead the Tommies to victory in the circle.
Cook's performance was the Tommies' fourth complete game thrown in a row.
St. Thomas added three more insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on back-to-back run-scoring doubles off the bats of Brooke Ellestad (2 RBI) and Coryn Jacobson (1 RBI).
The Tommies did not commit an error in the game for just the sixth time this year. Katie Goelz stole her 11thbase of the season to tie for the team-lead with Avery Wukawitz.
Brooke Ellestad went three for four with a double, two runs scored, and two RBI but was not the only Tommie with a multi-hit effort. Both Coryn Jacobson and Katie Goelz each tallied a double and a single.
Game Two Recap
Isabelle True worked through the first two innings without allowing a run but, the Phoenix scratched across their first and only run of the game to give them a brief one-run lead in the top of the third inning.
Just a change later the Tommies retook the lead and never gave it back. Kaitlyn Raymond doubled home both Avery Wukawitz and Adrianna Young. Coryn Jacobson then singled Raymond home and the lead stood at 3-1.
Avery Wukawitz walked a run in with the bases loaded in the fourth inning, Adrianna Young doubled home a run, and Sydney Mickett singled to score two and round out the scoring at 7-1 in the sixth inning.
Isabelle True went the distance in the circle and allowed just one run on five hits, four walks, and three strikeouts. Her performance was the Tommies' fifth complete game effort in a row (they are 5-0 during this stretch).
Avery Wukawitz, Morgan Klein, Adrianna Young, and Sydney Mickett each notched two hits in the ballgame. Eight of their ten hits were singles. Mackenzie Rudy (2) and Wukawitz (1) accounted for all three of the walks drawn by Tommie bats.
The defense was solid and did not commit an error in the game while also turning two double plays.
