Tommies explode for 21-9 win to open Northern Colorado series

The Tommies tallied a season-high 19 hits and scored in every inning. All but one starter recorded a hit and an RBI, and all but two totaled multiple hits. Richartz, Charlie Bartholomew, Ben Taxdahl and Ben Vujovich each totaled three RBI, including home runs by Richartz and Taxdahl.
Dylan O'Connell, who finished with two hits, two runs and one RBI, led off the game with the first of four straight singles. Taxdahl singled with two outs to score the fourth run of the inning for the Tommies in the top of the first.
The Tommies followed with one run in the top of the second, five in the third, one in the fourth, five in the fifth, three in the sixth and two in the seventh.
St. Thomas, led 11-0 before Northern Colorado scored for the first time with five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Jack Blesch (1-0) earned the win after throwing 2.0 innings with three strikeouts and four hits allowed. Kolby Gartner started the game and threw 3.0 innings while Evan Esch threw the final 2.0 innings. Esch led the team with four strikeouts.
Friday was the first time the Tommies have topped 20 runs in a game during the NCAA Division I era and the most scored in a game since totaling 21 against Macalester in 2016 and 22 against Macalester in 2015.
St. Thomas and Northern Colorado continue the series at 1 p.m. (CT) Saturday in Greeley, Colo.
