Softball begins 2023 campaign with five games at the DePaul Dome Tournament

St. Thomas Softball made impressive strides in 2022 as a first-year Division I program while navigating a challenging schedule.

The Tommies are looking to continue their progress into 2023 with 19 returners and six freshmen competing for playing time.

Year two for the Toms under Coach Jen Trotter officially begins Friday through Sunday Feb. 10-12 with five games in suburban Chicago at the DePaul Dome Tournament in Rosemont, Ill.

Friday's first pitch is set for 10 a.m. against Evansville of the Missouri Valley Conference, followed by a 12:30 p.m. matchup against Eastern Kentucky of the Ohio Valley Conference.

On Saturday, the Toms will face off against Big East Conference team Creighton at noon and play again at 7:30 p.m. against Atlantic Ten Conference member St. Louis.

The Toms' last contest of the weekend will be Sunday at 11 a.m., against Creighton.

Looking Back
Last season's 14-36 record included an 8-13 mark in the Summit League. St. Thomas jumped into the fire with a schedule that included eight teams that later qualified for the 2022 NCAA Tournament. St. Thomas' most notable win came against host team and No. 22-ranked South Florida at the USF Invitational -- the university's first victory over a nationally ranked opponent in the Division I era

Leading the Tommie returners is sophomore Brooke Ellestad, the Summit League Freshman of the Year and one of 25 freshmen under consideration for National Freshman of the Year, Ellestad started and played in 42 games for the Toms and had an impressive .425 batting average as well as a .455 on-base percentage. Out of 134 at bats, she had 57 hits, 28 runs, 27 RBI, two doubles, two triples, and six home runs. A first-team All-Summit League selection, Ellestad was a conference a one-time Ticket Smarter Player of the Week and made both national and conference academic award lists.

Also returning for the Toms is primary starting pitcher Christina Crawford. As a freshman in 2022, Crawford's 29 games played included 23 starts in the circle. She compiled a 8-11 won-loss record with a 4.99 ERA in 130.1 innings, with 100 strikeouts. She had one shutout win among13 complete games. On the offensive side, Crawford had a .317 on-base percentage,13 base hits, four runs scored, two home runs, and six RBI. She was also a Summit League Academic Honor Roll recipient.

Other freshmen standouts last season included Kaitlyn Raymond (.324 average, 47 hits, 22 runs, 20 walks, nine SBs in 48 games); and Cassidy Carby (8 HRs, 24 RBI, 18 runs, 15 walks in 40 games).
Other top players back include senior Coryn Jacobson (.256 BA, 33 hits, 12 walks, 17 RBI, five HBP ion 45 games); Katie Goelz (17 hits, 10 runs, seven SB, eight walks, .250 BA); and Sydney Mickett (.292 BA, seven hits, four walks, three sacrifices).

The Toms' 19 returners include seven infielders, six outfielders, six pitchers, four catchers, and two utility players. Six incoming freshmen include one utility, two pitchers, one catcher, one outfielder/shortstop, and one infielder that add talent and depth to the roster.
