Men's Hockey drops 7-2 score; on to CCHA playoffs
2/25/2023 8:43:00 PM | Men's Hockey
Mendota Heights, Minn. -- Lleyton Roed and Will Zmolek each had two goals and an assist to lead Bemidji State to a 7-2 road defeat of St. Thomas Men's Hockey in Saturday night's CCHA contest at Saint Thomas Ice Arena.
The Beavers ocercame an early 1-0 deficit. They outshot the Purple 36-17 as they avenged a 3-1 loss to the Tommies one night earlier. They converted two power-play goals and one shorthanded goal in the victory.
Mack Byers and Ethan Gauer scored goals for St. Thomas (11-21-2). Three goalies logged time in net for the Toms.
The contest closed the regular season and most likely capped St. Thomas' home season. St. Thomas took the league's No. 7 seed and opens CCHA playoff action next Friday March 3 on the road at No.-2 seed and top-20 ranked Michigan Tech in the league quarterfinals. It's a best-of-three format with a Sunday March 5 game if needed.
Quoting Coach Rico Blasi:
"A couple of bad goals (we allowed), Trotter probably wants a couple of them back. We got a little discombobulated there.
"They wanted home ice, they were a desperate team. They deserve all the credit. They deserved to win tonight. They were just a little better than us in every phase of the game."
