Zins, Wahlin step up in Men's Hockey 2-1 win

2/18/2023 8:18:00 PM | Men's Hockey

Sault Ste Marie, Mich. -- It wasn't easy, but Tommie Men's Hockey reached double digits for season wins and extended an impressive streak of CCHA weekend points with Saturday night's 2-1 road defeat of Lake Superior State.

Senior Trevor Zins scored his first game-winning goal in 365 days to stake the Toms to a 2-0 third-period lead, and freshman Aaron Trotter stopped 30 of 31 shots for the Purple (10-20-2 overall, 9-13-2 CCHA).

Coach Rico Blasi's team has now collected at least one point in eight consecutive CCHA series dating back to mid-November. After a 2-12 start, the Toms are 8-8-2 in their last 18 contests.

Freshman Lucas Wahlin, who rejoined the lineup Friday after a 10-game injury layoff, scored a first-period goal -- his first goal since Oct. 29.

Zins' power-play score, his first goal of the season, snapped the team's 0-for-16 run on the man advantage over a five-game span.

Quoting Coach Blasi:

"We battled really hard in front of our own net. I thought we did a really good job of eliminating second chances for them and getting inside them. It was a hard tough game tonight, they are a desperate team, they were throwing everything at you. It was a gutsy road win for us.

"I thought our penalty kill did a great job (killing off five of six). The (power play) goal they scored went off (Carson) Peters foot there, just an unfortunate bounce. We were in the right spot.

"It was gut check time again for this team. This keeps our streak going with points on the (CCHA) weekend since back in middle of November.

I'm proud of the way we battled. We have to clean up some things, obviously. Now we can get home and (next week) celebrate our seniors. We need to get after it against Bemidji (in those next two games).Happy with the effort and battle level we had.

"(Lucas) Wahlin is starting to get his legs, that's a good sign for us. He gives us so much more. He takes up a lot of ice. He kills penalties on the power play. He hunts pucks when he's on the ice.

"For Trevor Zins, he made a great shot and it was a great set up by Luc Laylin. Finally our power play scored, hopefully that relaxes them a little bit."
