Sophomore shortstop Brooke Ellestad's fourth-inning home run marked the only run for the St. Thomas softball team in a 6-1 loss to Creighton Saturday at the DePaul Dome Tournament in Rosemont, Illinois.

The Tommies (0-3) and Bluejays (2-0) held each other scoreless through the first three innings, notching just one hit apiece before the Bluejays took control in the bottom of the fourth.

After Ellestad's homer, Creighton quickly responded after a walk and a wild pitch put a runner on second with no outs. Junior infielder Madeline Vejvoda's right-field single evened the score to one all before two more Bluejay singles, and two St. Thomas errors resulted in two more runs, both unearned.

St. Thomas first-year pitcher Kiera Murphy earned her first career start and pitched all six innings for the Tommies. Murphy finished the game with two strikeouts, four walks, nine hits allowed and three earned runs against her.

Despite having multiple promising innings to tack on more runs, the Tommies were unable to best Creighton sophomore pitcher Alexis Wiggins, who ended the game with 11 strikeouts and sent all but two of the Tommies' starting nine batters back to the bench.

The Bluejays extended their lead to 5-1 in the fifth inning after Murphy gave up a home run to Emma Rosonke and a ground-rule double to Kailey Wilson back-to-back before defensive errors allowed Wilson to score shortly thereafter.

After Creighton added one last run on the board in the sixth, the Tommies did everything they could to try to mount a final-push rally. Jenna Kuhn's pinch-hit walk followed by Kaitlyn Raymond's walk put two Tommies on base as the heart of the batting order approached, but a pop out to the second baseman by Avery Wukawitz ended the small rally.

The Purple ended the game with five hits and seven runners left on base.

The Tommies will have a chance to even the series with the Bluejays Sunday at 11 a.m. after Saturday night's 7:30 showdown against St. Louis.
