Special teams were the difference in Men's Hockey defeat

The Mavericks of Minnesota State limited a high-flying Tommie offense to just one goal and 17 shots on net in 3-1 victory.
Mankato, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Mavericks (7-6-2, 5-3-1 CCHA) handed the University of St. Thomas Tommies (8-8-1, 6-5-0) a 3-1 defeat at the Mayo Clinic Event Center Friday night in front of a crowd of over 4,000 with stout defense and timely power play scoring.
RECAP
Just half of the opening frame was played five-on-five due to a pair of major penalties, one for each side. First it was Lucas Wahlin called for boarding at 9:38 and then a checking from behind major at 13:48 for the Mavericks.
Both sides combined for three goals between the first and second major penalties that overlapped for 50 seconds. Mankato got on the board first just 16 seconds into their power play opportunity, a team leading 12thof the season from Sam Morton.
Mack Byers answered quickly for the Toms one minute and 29 seconds later. He poke-checked the puck into the neutral zone and with no one to beat but the goaltender on the rush, put away his second shorthanded goal of the season and fourth goal in two games.
The Mavericks were not finished on their power play when they retook the lead 56 seconds later. The Toms came up empty on their major power play.
The second frame was tame in comparison to the hectic opening twenty. Minnesota State grabbed the lone goal with 8.9 seconds left up on the clock.
Both teams came up empty on two power plays. Ethan Gauer was whistled for a trip on the Maverick's scoring sequence sending Mankato onto the power play to open the third period.
Neither team added a tally in the final frame and combined for just 11 shots on goal, six for the Mavericks and five for the Tommies.
Overall Minnesota State outshot the Toms 24 to 17 and won 35 faceoffs to the Purples' 22.
St. Thomas finished the game 0-for-3 on the power play, the Mavericks were 2-for-5, both goals coming on the five-minute power play in the first period.
