Langbehn powers Tommies to victory over UMKC

KANSAS CITY, MO. - The University of St. Thomas women's basketball has hit its stride as of late. The Tommies traveled to Kansas City, Missouri on Sunday, December 31 to face the Roos in both teams' second conference game of 2023-24. It was St. Thomas who left victorious, handing UMKC its second consecutive Summit League loss while improving to 2-0 in conference play. Thanks to an impressive double-double performance by Jo Langbehn (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River), the Tommies were able to leave Kansas City, Missouri with a 66-57 victory, improving to 8-6 overall and 2-0 in Summit League play.

RECAP
After being shutout for over three minutes, the Tommies were able to score their first points of the game with a layup by Angelina Hammond (Hopkins, Minn. / Hopkins), making it 4-2 after the Ross opened the game by scoring four unanswered points. Still, St. Thomas' offense struggled early in the game, especially from three-point range, until Amber Scalia (Stillwater, Minn. / Stillwater) was able to knock one down to tie the score at 5-5. A layup by Langbehn and two made free throws gave the Tommies their first lead of the game, 9-8 with just under four minutes remaining in the first quarter. From there, the St. Thomas defense went to work, forcing multiple Kansas City turnovers to maintain a 16-13 advantage at the end of the quarter.

The Tommies stingy defense continued to create scoring opportunities in the second quarter. Jordyn Lamker (Maple Grove, Minn. / Maple Grove) and Langbehn maintained the St. Thomas lead in the opening four minutes before Sammy Opichka's (Green Bay, Wis. / Notre Dame Academy) points off the bench pushed the Tommie lead to 27-19. The Roos, though, found some life in the final two minutes of the second, whittling the St. Thomas lead to 34-29 at the half.

UMKC came out of the break on fire. Aside from a made free throw by Langbehn, the Tommies were shut out in the opening minutes of the third, allowing the Roos to take a 37-35 lead. Scalia and Jade Hill (Minneapolis, Minn. / South) were able to take back the lead with two points each, but a three by the Roos quickly changed that. From there, the two teams traded points, leads and baskets. Points by Hammond, Scalia, and Langbehn regained a 46-41 lead for St. Thomas and the team went into the final quarter holding a 52-48 advantage.

The game stayed close the first four minutes of the fourth quarter, as neither team led by more than three points. That changed when Jordyn Glynn (Grand Meadow, Minn. / Grand Meadow) hit her first three of the game, boosting the Tommies lead to 57-52 with 5:28 remaining on the clock. That lead was extended with two made free throws by Scalia, giving St. Thomas a seemingly cushy lead at seven points. UMKC, though, made things interesting, closing the gap to four points with 3:39 left in regulation. The Roos would struggle to score in the remained three minutes of play. Forced to foul, the Tommies took advantage of their opportunities at the charity stripe, while the defense held UMKC scoreless for nearly three full minutes. A quick layup by the Roos with 19 seconds left wasn't enough to spark another rally, as HIll clinched the 66-57 victory from the free throw line.
