Nailbiter in Mendota Heights hands Men's Hockey first setback of the season
10/8/2023 8:31:00 PM | Men's Hockey
The Tommies outshot the Huskies 34-20 but could not solve SCSU’s goaltender in 1-0 battle.
MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. - The University of St. Thomas Men's Hockey team (1-1-0) fought hard in their home opener against the St. Cloud State University Huskies (1-1-0).
The entirety of the sixty-minute affair was a grueling showcase of grit and an extension of an overtime thriller the night before.
Much like that OT game in St. Cloud, game two of the series would be decided by one goal, this time, in favor of the Huskies.
Recap
The first period was just a preview of what was to come between these two teams. A frame peppered with penalties for both sides and fraught with close calls on each end of the ice.
Overall, both teams struggled offensively and despite five total power play opportunities (three for UST and two for SCSU) the game remained scoreless after twenty minutes.
The Huskies outshot the Tommies nine to six in the first and held a 12-5 advantage in the face-off circle.
St. Thomas controlled the play for much of the second period. They fired more shots on goal than St. Cloud (11-8) and improved tremendously on the dot winning 16 faceoffs to seven.
Two events headlined the frame: a game misconduct and a goal for St. Cloud.
The Huskies' Mason Salquist was whistled for a check of Lucas Wahlin that sent the Tommie captain face first in the boards. After video review Salquist was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct for boarding.
Up a man overall and with five minutes of power play time, St. Thomas was primed to pounce. The Tommies managed four shots on goal, but Dominic Basse would not be beat and for the second night in a row the Tommies could not score after drawing a major penalty.
The tough luck would continue for the home team when a blocked shot at the blue line turned into an odd man rush for SCSU's Adam Ingram who had no one to beat but Aaron Trotter. Ingram went five-hole and scored the games' only goal, unassisted at 10:36.
As head coach Rico Blasi said in his post-game press conference, "We threw the kitchen sink at them there at the end but sometimes you just don't get those bounces."
The kitchen sink? Seventeen shots on goal and 37 shots total in the third period.
Overall, St. Thomas peppered St. Cloud with 34 shots on goal, the first time they had outshot the Huskies in their six all-time meetings.
After allowing four power play goals the night before, the Purple's penalty kill was a perfect five for five.
