Men’s Hockey falls in close contest with Bemidji State

The Tommies matched chances with the Beavers of Bemidji State, but an 0-5 power play showing was too much to overcome on the road.
BEMIDJI, Minn. – The University of St. Thomas Men's Hockey team (2-5-1, 0-2-0 CCHA), could not avoid the CCHA series sweep on Saturday night, falling 2-0 to the Bemidji State Beavers (3-3-0, 2-0-0 CCHA). Jacob Sibell stopped 27 of 28 shots flung his way as Bemidji sealed the game with an empty netter in the final minute.
RECAP
The Toms came out firing in the first period with multiple chances at Bemidji's goaltender. They outshot the Beavers 12-9 despite being bested in the faceoff circle 11-5. St. Thomas also killed off two penalties in the period and pushed the frame scoreless at the first buzzer.
Second period power play troubles provided Bemidji State with the momentum, and they capitalized seven minutes into the frame while both teams skated with four due to dueling unsportsmanlike conduct penalties.
The Tommies came up empty on all four of their power play chances in the second period. Bemidji State led in shots on goal (10-9).
A hard-fought third period ended with an empty-netter at 19:17.
The game finished all knotted up with 29 shots on goal apiece. Lucas Wahlin and Cooper Gay each led the Toms with four shots each and Luke Manning was the best on the draw for the night going 13-8.
The reigning CCHA Goaltender of the Week, Jacob Sibell shined once more in the crease. The transfer junior stopped all but one puck and lowered his season goals against average to a league-leading 1.36. His .941 save percentage is the second-best in the CCHA.
