Tale of two games for Men's Hockey in road shutout loss

1/27/2023 10:14:00 PM | Men's Hockey

Tempe, Ariz. -- Tommie Men's Hockey was locked in a scoreless tie over the game's first 38 minutes Friday night in non-conference play at Arizona State.

But that proved to be the night's high point for the Purple.

The host Sun Devils scored late in period two for a 1-0 lead, then added three third-period goals to close out a 4-0 shutout of the Tommies.

ASU (12-16) outshot the Toms 41-17 on the contest, including a 17-5 advantage in period three. Four different players scored the goals for the Sun Devils.

Freshman Aaron Trotter recorded 37 saves for St. Thomas (7-16-2). Trotter and his teammates killed off a five-minute power play in period one, but ASU scored on another five-minute power play early in period three to build a 3-0 lead.

The teams play again Saturday (8 p.m. Minnesota time) to close out the weekend series.

Did You Know?

This was just the third time this season that St. Thomas faced 40 or more shots. Last season, the Toms allowed 40 or more shots in 11 games.

The Toms played their 25th game of the season on Friday and have nine games left to play in the regular season, including five of the last seven games at home.

This was the third shutout loss of the season for the Toms, all on the road. St. Thomas has been held under two goals just twice over its last 23 games.

Fifteen months ago, ASU swept the Toms on home ice by scores of 5-2 and 4-2. In that 5-2 win, ASU outscored the Toms 4-1 in period three to break open a close game.
