Another point for Men's Hockey after 3-3 tie vs. Falcons

1/20/2023 3:17:00 PM | Men's Hockey

Mendota Heights, Minn. -- After overcoming an early 2-0 deficit and surviving a hard-fought overtime period, Tommie Men's Hockey tied first-place Bowling Green and claimed a four-point series after Friday night's CCHA game at Saint Thomas Ice Arena.

St. Thomas (7-15-2 overall, 6-10-2 CCHA), which scored a 4-2 win over the Falcons on Thursday night, has built its first three-game unbeaten streak of the D-I era (2-0-1).

The Toms improved to 5-3-2 over their last 10 games.

All four season meetings between St. Thomas and Bowling Green have gone down to the wire, with each team scoring 11 of the 22 total goals. Both goalies were sharp in both games this weekend making many point-blank saves. On Friday, Aaron Trotter stopped 35 of 38 shots, while BGSU's Christian Stoever stopped 26 of 29.

Freshman Jake Braccini started the scoring for Coach Rico Blasi's squad with an unassisted goal in the sixth-minute of the second period to cut the Falcon lead to 2-1. Junior Mack Byers scored the equalizer with 5:31 left in the second, just a minute behind Braccini, connecting on his 13th goal of the season. Byers has scored nine goals in the past eight games.

Sophomore Tim Piechowski recorded the go-ahead goal with seven minutes left in the third period, putting the Purple up 3-2 with their 22nd shot of the night.

Bowling Green (14-13-1, 11-8-1 CCHA) came out hot with two quick goals in the first-period, fueled by Thursday's surprise loss. The Falcons offense went quiet but came alive in the game's final 2:00. Trailing 3-2, BGSU pulled its goalie with 1:40 left in regulation and converted an extra-attacker goal with 1:31 to play to know the score 3-3.

After a scoreless five-minute overtime, Bowling Green earns two points in the conference after scoring a 2-1 decision in the shootout.

Quoting Coach Rico Blasi:

"That's college hockey. They battled hard, we battled back. (Aaron) Trotter made some nice saves. Their guy (Christian Stoever) made some big saves. The hardest thing to do in college hockey is sweep. You saw that.

"We got four points out of the weekend, so overall I think that's a pretty good weekend."
