Swim & Dive each selected to finish sixth in Summit League Preseason Coaches’ Poll

Sioux Falls, S.D. – Both St. Thomas Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving programs have been selected to finish sixth in the Summit League as the 2022-23 Summit League Preseason Coaches' Poll was released Wednesday.
 
Tommie Women's Swimming & Diving received 20 points to be slotted sixth while the men's team totaled 19 points to also land sixth. Denver was selected as the top program in both the men's and women's polls.
 
Four members of the St. Thomas program were named as preseason swimmers and divers to watch by the Summit League.
 
The men's team will be led by sophomores Alex Foti and Joe Rudd as the preseason swimmers to watch. Foti, a native of Waukesha, Wis., and Rudd, a native of Duluth, Minn., each earned Summit League Peak Swimmer of the Week honors during their inaugural seasons in the league.
 
Foti broke the St. Thomas 1000 freestyle and 1650 freestyle record at the Summit League Championships as a freshman. He compiled four first-place finishes in the 500 freestyle, three wins in the 1000 freestyle and one win in the 1650 freestyle. Foti was a 2021-22 Summit League Academic Honor Roll recipient.
 
Rudd broke the program's 200 breaststroke record at the Summit League Championships during his freshman season. He totaled two wins in the 200 breaststroke, one win in the 100 breaststroke, one win in the 200m IM and one win in the 400m IM. Rudd was a 2021-22 Summit League Academic Honor Roll recipient.
 
The women's team is led by junior Grace Urkiel, the St. Thomas preseason swimmer to watch, and senior Allison An, the St. Thomas preseason diver to watch.
 
Urkiel, a native of Rosemount, Minn., earned All-Summit League honors last season after a third-place finish in the 100 breaststroke at the Summit League Championships. She set the program record in the 50 breaststroke and tallied four top-five finishes, including as part of two relays, at the league championships. Urkiel was a 2021-22 Summit League Academic Honor Roll recipient.
 
An, a native of Owatonna, Minn., finished eighth in the three-meter dive at the Summit League Championships last season. She captured two first-place finishes in the one-meter dive and one win in the three-meter dive. An was honored to the Summit League Commissioner's List of Academic Excellence and as a member of the Summit League Academic Honor Roll.
