St. Paul, Minn. - St. Thomas softball (13-34) split a doubleheader in the team's home finale against Green Bay (23-21) on Tuesday.
Following a three-up, three-down top of the first by Christina Crawford, the Tommie offense exploded for five runs in the bottom of the first frame. Kaitlyn Raymond and Brooke Ellestad led off with back-to-back singles, setting up a two-run double by Megan Baniecke to go up 2-0. With two runners on, the freshman pitcher Crawford lined a home run over the left field fence for her second deep ball of the season.
The righty Crawford followed up the first inning with a three-strikeout top of the second. In all, Crawford struck out seven Phoenix batters in five innings of work, while allowing just one run on two base hits. Crawford picked up her seventh win of the season in the process.
St. Thomas would tack on two runs in the bottom of the fourth on a two-RBI single by Cassidy Carby, driving in Maddie Grad and Raymond. The final runs of game one came in the bottom of the fifth on Crawford and Raymond RBI base knocks.
Four different Tommies picked up multiple base hits in the win, including three-hit performances from Raymond and Crawford. Both Raymond and Crawford scored two runs and combined for five RBI (four from Crawford). Carby and Baniecke also added two runs driven in, each.
In game two, the Tommies trailed 1-0 heading to the bottom of the third, when Brooke Ellestad lined a single to right field to drive in the run. Following a strikeout swinging, an error by the Green Bay catcher allowed another run to cross the plate, putting St. Thomas up 2-1.
After a 4-0 stretch by the Phoenix, the Purple would score their last run of the game in the bottom of the fifth on an Ellestad single to right field to score Adrianna Young.
Isabelle True took the loss in the second game, striking out three batters in seven innings, and allowing five runs.
