Tulsa, Okla. - Freshman sprinter Gary Afram way outperformed his No. 7 seeding and took second place in the 100 meters and claimed all-conference honors Saturday in the final day of the three-day Summit League championship meet hosted by Oral Roberts University.
Those eight points helped St. Thomas (63.5) hold off Oral Roberts (59) for fourth place, improving one spot on the fifth-place showing at the 2022 Summit Indoor meet in February. In that indoor competition, Oral Roberts outscored the Tommies by 15 points for fourth place.
North Dakota State (241.5) outscored runner-up South Dakota State (205) to take first in the seven-team field that wrapped up a three-day battle on Saturday. Those two were followed by South Dakota (163), St. Thomas (63.5), Oral Roberts (59), North Dakota (56), and Western Illinois (23).
A Rosemount, Minn., native, Afram had a hand in 17 team points and was selected the Newcomer of the Championships on the men's side. Besides the 100, Afram also ran on the Toms' third-place 4x100 relay, and added three points with a sixth-place long jump on Friday. In Friday's 100 prelims he clocked 10.52, the second best time in program history and the No. 42 best freshman time in Division I in 2022.
