4/22/2022 1:40:00 PM | Baseball

Coming off a 6-0 win against the Gophers, St. Thomas (8-21) is set to play three home games Saturday and Sunday April 23-24 at Koch Diamond against Summit League opponent Northern Colorado.

Friday's game was postponed by rain and a wet field. Saturday's game starts at 10 a.m. and may be followed by a 1:15 p.m. game, depending on the afternoon forecast.

Unless that second game is paused or pushed back one day, Sunday's finale is set to start at 1 p.m.

Last Time Out

Sophomore Kolby Gartner recorded his first collegiate shutout -- and the Tommie staff's first complete game in Division I -- with a three-hitter to lead St. Thomas to a 6-0 victory over Minnesota in non-conference play Tuesday night at Siebert Field.

The Purple (8-21 overall, 2-7 Summit) outhit the Gophers 12-3 as they built their first three-game win streak in D-I. The Toms played error-free defense for their sixth consecutive game and lifted their season fielding clip to .981.

The Toms are scoring 3.5 runs a game and allowing 4.5 runs a contest. Their 21 losses include 15 one- or two-run defeats. That includes a 1-10 record in games decided by one run (0-4 mark in extra innings). The Toms, who regularly start 6-8 players from their D-III era, have only been shut out twice in 28 games (and none in their last 17 games) -- to Power 5 teams Minnesota and Northwestern.

On April 9-10, the Toms played their best series of 2022, against Summit leader North Dakota State, (won 6-0; lost 4-1 and 8-7). Tommie pitchers struck out 31 over 25 innings and as an offense the Purple outscored (14-12) and outhit (26-17) the Bison over the three contests. NDSU (19-10) came in 8-1 in its previous nine.

About Northern Colorado

The Bears (9-26, 5-7) are coming off a dominant 19-7 win over Colorado Christian. Six Northern Colorado pitchers set a program-record with 19 strikeouts. After a 1-14 start, the Bears are 8-12 in their last 20, including a three-game sweep of Western Illinois and 1-2 records  vs. both Omaha and South Dakota State. They average five runs a game and allow 10 runs a contest while batting .263.

National Stats

Out of 300 D-I teams, Tommie season totals rank with the top national programs in three categories  -- fielding percentage (.981, among top 12; strikeouts per nine innings (10.5, top 25); and ERA (4.32, top 60). Individually, Graham Laubscher ranks among the top 40 in Ks per nine innings (12.6).
