Softball swept on day one of Mizzou Classic

3/4/2022 6:21:00 PM | Softball

Columbia, Mo. - St. Thomas softball (2-10) battled in a close loss to Bradley (8-7), 3-1, before falling at No. 8 Mizzou (13-4), 13-0.

In a 3-1 battle against the Bradley Braves, the Tommies found themselves on the losing end, after two unearned runs were allowed to score by St. Thomas. Junior Isabelle True received the starting nod and tossed 2.1 innings, striking out one, and allowing one earned run. In solid relief work, freshman Christina Crawford allowed no earned runs and struck out three batters in 3.2 innings.

It did not take long for the Tommies to tally a base hit, as senior Nicole Pieper doubled to left center, but was stranded on third base. The next St. Thomas base hit came in the third on a Kenzie Miller single to second base, her first of two hits on the day. They were the first two hits of the season for the sophomore outfielder.

After being held scoreless for over six innings, senior Megan Baniecke lined her first Division I home run over the left center fence to but the Toms on the scoreboard. Miller would ground out one batter later to end the game.

Against the top-15 Tigers, the Tommies were held without a hit offensively, struggling in a 13-0 defeat. Baniecke, Kendall Hopkins, and Grace Bennett all pitched in the game for the Purple, as Hopkins tallied the lone strikeout for the staff.

It marked the second time the Toms have been no hit this season, with the last coming against No. 15 Louisiana on Feb. 25.
