Evanston, Ill. - Host Northwestern University scratched across the tying and winning runs with the help of only one hit in the ninth inning of Sunday's 3-2 walk-off win over St. Thomas in game two non-conference baseball action.
The Wildcats won game one 9-0 as part of the day's sweep.
The loss spoiled another strong pitching start by Tommie freshman Walker Retz. The newcomer worked seven innings and left the game with a 2-1 lead. He allowed one run on one hit and two walks and struck out nine in seven innings of work. He allowed a solo home run in the fourth inning.
Sam Kulesa's solo home run -- the Toms' first homer in Division I -- tied the second game 1-1 in the top of the fifth inning. In the sixth, Max Moris singled, was bunted to second, took third on a wild pitch, and scored on Brigs Richartz' sacrifice fly.
St. Thomas outhit NU 8-3 but left 10 runners on base. The Toms had two errors to help the Wildcats' comeback win in the ninth inning. A one-out bases-loaded balk brought home the winning run.
Kulesa, Moris and Avery Lehman had two-hit games.
Northwestern rode freshman lefty Sean Sullivan' three-hit shut out performance in the seven-inning opener in a 9-0 victory. The Wildcats slugged three home runs.
Moris, Matthew Enck and Jonah Hoeg recorded the St. Thomas hits in game one.
St. Thomas plays two more non-conference games Wednesday in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, facing NAIA teams Mount Mercy and Iowa Wesleyan starting at 9 a.m.
