Mendota Heights, Minn. -- Junior Trevor Zins connected for the winning goal on a power play with 65 seconds left to snap a 1-1 tie and St. Thomas Men's Hockey held on for a 2-1 comeback win over Lake Superior State in Friday night's CCHA contest at Saint Thomas Ice Arena.
Senior Peter Thome stopped 32 of 33 shots and junior Luke Manning scored a goal and an assist for the Tommies (3-27-1 overall, 3-19-1 CCHA).
The Purple snapped a 10-game home winless streak (0-9-1) dating back to Oct. 23.It was just the second time this season they held an opponent under two goals in regulation time.
Lake Superior (14-16-1, 10-13) broke a scoreless tie 1:30 into the third period on a goal by Benito Posa. Manning tied the game midway through the third frame, assisted by Joey Sofo and Kimball Johnson. Halfway through a late power play, St. Thomas took the lead as Zins slipped a shot under the goalie for a 2-1 lead.
"Peter (Thome) in net and our (defensive) core and forwards did a good job coming back, we didn't give them to many great (chances). We blocked shots, had sticks on them."
The Toms bounced back from a tough weekend sweep at Alaska-Fairbanks where they were outscored 13-4.
"We preach team, details, and the process. (You need to have ) short memory, come back to work Wednesday, we had two days off. With those trips its always good to give the guys 48 hours off, so we gave them Monday and Tuesday off and came back to practice on Wednesday. We had a slow start as you can imagine, but I thought we got better as the practice went along. I thought we had a really good practice, our guys were excited about being home.
"It is coming down to the end here so for us to come out with an effort like that, I was really happy with our guys. It's huge, you want home ice advantage and we are slowly building that part of it too. (In) every aspect of our program, players to our team to our fans, it is starting to come together and starting to feel like we are making progress.
"I think for us it's always the same thing, focus on the details and get ready to go again tomorrow night. The staff will watch video, that's our job that will give them some things to think about tomorrow, and they have to go out and execute. That's why they are here, (LSSU) is gonna come out hungry, they are fighting for home ice. We have to continue to get better. I think the guys were happy that they saw the team effort and were rewarded. I think our job is to put it behind us and focus on tomorrow."
The teams play again Saturday here at the STA rink with a 7:07 p.m. start.

"I thought we played well all night," said Tommie coach Rico Blasi. "We made some mistakes, but so did they. I thought it was a good hockey game. Obviously it comes down to a bounce on the power play, but I thought we stayed focused in the third period when they scored. I thought our details were pretty good tonight. We managed the puck a lot better than we have in the past. It was a team effort.
