Men’s Basketball protects the rock, but falls to USD

Vermillion, S.D. – The St. Thomas Men's Basketball Team (8-18, 2-12) fell to the University of South Dakota (16-10, 9-6), 81-60 on Thursday night.
The Coyotes raced out to a 17-0 lead just over five minutes into the game. St. Thomas responded with a 10-3 run of its own to bring the score to 20-10 in favor of USD with 9:41 to play in the first half.
The Tommies outscored the Yotes 23-20 over the final nine minutes of the first half to bring the score to 37-23 in favor of USD going into halftime.
As a team, St. Thomas connected on 31 percent (9-of-29) from the field and 25 percent (4-of-16) from behind the arc and made its lone attempt from the charity stripe.
Individually, senior G Riley Miller led the way with 14 points on a 4-of-8 shooting effort from deep. Miller accounted for all four of the Purple's made threes in the first 20 minutes of the game.
The Coyotes outscored the Tommies 21-13 through the first 10 minutes of the second half to extend their lead to 59-36 with 10:02 to play in the game. Over the final 10 minutes of the game, St. Thomas outscored USD 24-22, but the deficit proved to be too much as the Yotes earned the 81-60 win.
As a team, St. Thomas connected on 37 percent (22-of-29) of its shots from the field and 27 percent (9-of-34) from behind the arc in the game and committed only seven turnovers in the game.
Individually, Miller led the charge with 17 points. Miller was joined by Bjorklund (11) as the two Tommies to net double-digit points.
St. Thomas continues action in the Mt. Rushmore State as they travel to Brookings, S.D. to face South Dakota State University, tipoff is slated for 2:00 p.m.
