12/19/2022 9:21:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Grand Forks, N.D. -- St. Thomas Women's Basketball put together a late defensive effort Monday night before a 70-56 loss at North Dakota. The Tommies outscored the Fighting Hawks by 10 points in the fourth quarter but shot under 30 percent from the field to open the Summit League schedule.

Maggie Negaard and Sammy Opichka gave the Tommies a quick 4-0 lead before holding their final lead of the game, 8-7, on a layup from Autam Mendez. North Dakota followed with a 10-2 run to set up a five-point lead heading into the second quarter.

St. Thomas made four field goals in each of the second and third quarters as North Dakota began to pull away. The Fighting Hawks limited the Tommies to just two points over the final 6:17 of the first half, while sinking 10-of-16 shots in the quarter, to take a 45-24 lead into halftime.

The Tommies shot season lows of 29.4 percent from the field (20-68) and 15.6 percent from 3-point range (5-32) compared to 45.9 percent from the floor (28-61) and 31.8 percent (7-22) from long range for the Fighting Hawks.

Jo Langbehn led the Tommies with 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting while Mendez led with eight rebounds. Negaard finished with nine points and Opichka totaled eight.

The Purple remain on the road Dec. 21 with a conference contest at North Dakota State in Fargo, N.D.
