Flames burn the Tommies in overtime, 75-71, Sunday afternoon

Chicago, Ill. -- St. Thomas Women's Basketball overcame a 12-point second-half deficit but fell in overtime at UIC, 75-71, Sunday afternoon.
 
The first quarter featured eight lead changes and three ties, including a 12-3 run over a 1:31 span for a 14-7 Tommie lead. Alexis Pratt tallied five points in the opening quarter, all coming in the run that gave St. Thomas a game-high seven-point lead.
 
The Flames went 4-of-4 from the field to finish the final 4:12 of the quarter, bringing the Tommie lead to one, 19-18. St. Thomas followed with 13 points in the second quarter while allowing UIC to convert 8-of-12 shots to grab a game-high 12-point, 44-32 lead at halftime.
 
Maggie Negaard's first 3-pointer of the game started a 9-3 run for St. Thomas to begin the second half, bringing the deficit to six, 47-41. Following back-to-back scores from the Flames, the Tommies finished the third quarter on a 10-4 run, going 5-of-7 from the field, to trail 55-51.
 
St. Thomas' strong second-half defense continued into the fourth quarter, limiting UIC to nine points over the final 10 minutes. The Tommies went on an 8-1 run over a near three-minute span to nab a 64-60 lead with 1:46 to play. The Flames converted two layups within the final minute to force overtime.
 
In the overtime period, Jordyn Lamker scored four of the Tommies' first five points to take a 69-67 lead. The Flames held the Tommies to 1-of-5 shooting over the final 1:35 of overtime to secure the victory. Lamker totaled six points in overtime to finish with a team-high 14 points.
 
Lamker went 6-of-10 shooting and was one of four Tommies with double-digit scoring. Negaard, Jade Hill and Jo Langbehn all totaled 11 points while Sammy Opichka pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
 
The Tommies shot 42.9 percent from the field (30-70) compared to 51.0 percent (26-51) by the Flames. Both teams shot 33.3 percent from 3-point range while UIC went 19-of-25 from the free throw line. The Flames won the rebound margin, 37-29, while the Tommies won the turnover margin, 15-10.
 
St. Thomas remains on the road Thursday, Dec. 1 at Utah Valley as part of a three-game road trip.
