St. Thomas falls in five-set thriller to Oral Roberts

St. Paul, Minn. -- St. Thomas Volleyball's 2022 season came to a close Saturday during a thrilling five-set loss to Oral Roberts 25-18, 16-25, 25-16, 18-25, 12-15.
Oral Roberts opened the match on a 4-1 run before St. Thomas came back to take the lead, 9-8. Both teams traded leads until the Tommies pulled ahead in the final minutes and secured a 25-18 win. Mattila and Ricard led the set with four kills each, Wild and Galvin following close behind with three.
The Tommies held an early lead in set two before the Golden Eagles came back to force back-and-forth lead changes. After St. Thomas tied the set at 15-15, Oral Roberts closed on a 10-1 run. The Purple jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the third set and didn't allow ORU to hold a lead. After being tied 13-13, St. Thomas scored nine straight points on its way to taking a 2-1 match lead.
Oral Roberts led through the entirety of the fourth set, pulling away with seven straight points to take a 23-14 advantage on its way to the set win. The Tommies and Golden Eagles traded leads in the final set before ORU scored five of the final seven points of the match.
As St. Thomas concludes its season with a 4-26 overall and 2-16 record in the Summit League, it says goodbye to graduate student and defensive specialist, Carrie Rutledge. Rutledge ended her last game with a team-high 17 digs and six assists.
Sophomore Lauren Galvin and freshman Emma Goerger led the team with 10 kills each while Galvin added her seventh double-double of the season with 13 digs. Freshman Allie Kopp paced the Tommies with 20 assists, followed by Keya Luta Win Hunt with 18.
