11/18/2022 9:15:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Missoula, Mont. – Sophomore Andrew Rohde's impressive start to his collegiate career continued Friday night as he sank a buzzer-beater to hand St. Thomas Men's Basketball a 78-76 win over Troy at the Zootown Classic.
Parker Bjorklund and Rohde followed for a 5-0 run to tie the game, 33-33. After free throws from the Trojans, Riley Miller sank his first 3-pointer of the game to give the Tommies their first lead, 36-35.
The Tommies and Trojans scored back-and-forth through the first eight minutes of the second half until Engels started a 7-0 run to regain the lead, 53-52. Troy pulled ahead by six points with just over five minutes to play before a 6-1 run over the next two minutes to bring St. Thomas within one.
After trailing 71-68 with 2:38 to play, Bjorklund and Miller hit back-to-back 3-pointers to take a 74-71 lead. The Tommies and Trojans traded scores, including two free throws from each team, to hold a 76-76 tie with 24 seconds to play. Rohde backed down into the paint before sinking a floating jumper as time expired.
Rohde's 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting gives him double-digit scoring in all five games this season while he's shot over 50 percent in three. He added five assists, three rebounds and one steal.
Miller also led the Tommies with 16 points on 3-of-8 shooting from 3-point range. He's now made a 3-pointer in 39 of his last 40 games and is averaging nearly three 3-pointers per game. Miller was the last Tommie to sink a game-winning buzzer beater, coming in 2020 against Saint Mary's to clinch a share of the MIAC title.
Bjorklund finished with 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting while Kendall Blue scored 10 points, his third straight game in double-digits.
In each of the Tommies wins, they shot 42.9 percent from 3-point range and finished above 53 percent from the field. St. Thomas and Troy each totaled 13 turnovers, although the Purple scored 17 points off turnovers compared to 11 for the Trojans.
St. Thomas and Merrimack close out the Zootown Classic Saturday at 6 p.m.
