Missoula, Mont. -- Graduate student Riley Miller set a career-high and neared the program single-game record with nine 3-pointers Saturday night to guide St. Thomas Men's Basketball to a 72-61 win over Merrimack in the Zootown Classic finale.
Miller's hot shooting night started just one minute into action as he hit his first 3-pointer of the game. The Warriors (1-4) nabbed the lead back before the Tommies' (4-2) onslaught of 3-pointers began to pick up as the Purple's next five baskets came from beyond the arc.
Miller's fourth and final 3-pointer of the half sparked a 12-0 run for a 34-18 lead with 6:31 to play in the half. Merrimack closed the first half on a 16-3 run as St. Thomas went 1-of-6 from the field with five turnovers given away.
Parker Bjorklund started second-half scoring with a second-chance jumper that sparked a 15-2 run for the Tommies. The 52-36, 16-point lead was St. Thomas' largest lead of the night as it remained in double digits through the remainder of the game.
Miller led all scorers with 28 points, two shy of his career-high, and took just one shot within the 3-point arc. Bjorklund followed with 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting while he tied Brooks Allen for the team lead with six rebounds.
Miller and Andrew Rohde were named to the Zootown Classic All-Tournament Team. Miller averaged 16.7 points per game on 43.3 percent shooting while Rohde averaged 11.0 points, 5.3 assists and 5.0 rebounds per game.
St. Thomas remains on the road through the week of Thanksgiving with a 2 p.m. tip-off Wednesday, Nov. 23 at Milwaukee and a 7 p.m. tip-off Saturday, Nov. 26 at Utah.
