St. Paul, Minn. -- St. Thomas Men's Golf coach Matt Rachey has announced the signing of two Class of 2023 players: Gavin Newkirk and Zach Rouleau.
Gavin Newkirk of Batavia, Ill., won Conference Player of the Year honors in 2020, and claimed two AJGA top-10 finishes in 2022 (sixth place at the AJGA - UHY St. Louis Junior, and ninth place at the AJGA - UHY Detroit Junior). Gavin has also recorded three victories and eleven top-10's in IJGA events in the state of Illinois.
Zach Rouleau of Farmington, Minn., is a two-time all-state and all-conference honoree with a 4.00 grade-point average. Zach also plays hockey at Farmington, a sport his dad, Brett Rouleau, competed in while at Hamline University.
"We are very excited to welcome Zach and Gavin to the UST golf family," Rachey said. "Both young men are hard working, focused, competitive, and are confident in their process. These qualities will not only translate on the golf course, but they are building blocks toward the culture we are striving to create within Tommie Golf."
This fall, starting year two of St. Thomas' Division I play with four events, the Tommies' highlight came at the 14-team, 54-hole Big O tournament hosted by the Omaha Mavericks. The Purple beat all 13 foes -- including five Summit League opponents -- to record St. Thomas' first Division I tournament victory in any sport after three second-place team finishes in 2021-22. The Toms have five tournaments set for spring 2023 capped by the 54-hole conference meet in Lincoln, Neb.
