Thrilling finish ends Men's Hockey skid, gives Rico win No. 400

1/15/2022 7:49:00 PM | Men's Hockey

Big Rapids, Mich. -- Tommie junior John Schuldt capped a wild third period as he muscled in a goal during a scramble in front of the net with three seconds left in regulation time to lift St. Thomas Men's Hockey to a 4-3 win at Ferris State and a split of their weekend series.

Senior Peter Thome stopped 38 of 41 shots for St. Thomas (2-22 overall, 2-16 CCHA). The late drama ended the Toms' 15-game losing streak, provided St. Thomas its first road victory, and gave Rico Blasi his 400th career coaching win in 21 seasons, including his first 20 at Miami (Ohio).

The Purple never trailed but saw their 3-0 lead through two periods evaporate. Ferris used an extra-attacker goal to tie the game with 54 seconds to play.
But during a late scramble Schuldt was credited with his first goal as a Tommie, with Matthew Jennings and Nolan Sawchuk getting assists on the game-winner.

Freshman Tim Piechowski scored two goals and Jennings added two assists. Cameron Recchi stayed hot with a first-period goal, and he now has three goals and two assists over his last four games.

Thome's 38 saves tied for his second most this season.

St. Thomas is home Thursday (7 p.m.) to face top-ranked Minnesota State in the first of a two-game series. The teams play again Saturday (4:30 p.m.) outdoors in Mankato at Blakeslee Stadium.
