Tete Vecas scored back-to-back goals in an early 75-second span to help visiting California Baptist (5-1-1) post a 4-1 defeat of St. Thomas Men's Soccer in non-conference play Monday at South Field.
CBU added two more goals early in the second half, both by Bryan Iliohan. The first was a slick high corner shot off a foul and free kick near the top of the box. The latter goal occurred after a hand ball was whistled in the box, and Iliohan converted a penalty kick to push the lead to 4-0.
St. Thomas' offene had several good second-half runs. The Tommies (0-7-1) averted a shutout in the 88th minute when Jack Barry's long throw in was converted into a goal by sophomore Wes Lorrens. It was the first official collegiate goal for Lorrens, who also scored an exhibition-game goal last month against the Wisconsin Badgers.
Coach Jon Lowery was able to use 22 players in the contest. Tucker Mann played the first 79 minutes in goal and made five saves. The Toms outshot CBU, 17-15, with an 11-10 edge in shots on goal. Evan Ince made nine saves in the nets for CBU.
The Lancers are in the fourth and final year of transition from Division II to Division I and off to their best start in their D-I chapter.
St. Thomas opens Summit League play on the road next Saturday at Eastern Illinois.
