NCAA-bound Women's Tennis grabs a final MIAC crown

5/8/2021 6:52:00 PM | Women's Tennis

Junior Brooke Hapuku and freshman Monterey Knewtson won in singles and doubles to fuel top-seed St. Thomas Women's Tennis' 5-0 win over second-seed Gustavus and secure the automatic berth into the NCAA Division III tournament.

Saturday afternoon's victory came at the University of Minnesota Baseline Club's outdoor courts in Minneapolis.

In its final season in the conference and in Division III, St. Thomas (13-3) ran its win streak to 13 and stayed unbeaten on the season against Division III opponents.

This is the program's second MIAC playoff crown, joining the 2015 team which won on the road at Gustavus to secure its ticket into the NCAA playoffs.

Two weeks ago, the Purple claimed the program's first MIAC regular-season crown in 30 years, and now they are the first St. Thomas tennis team to sweep the regular-season and playoff championships. They handed Gustavus (16-2) their only two losses so far this season.

Freshmen Nicole Snezhko and Jannah ElNemr survived another stiff test at first doubles to pull out an 8-7 win and lead a 3-0 sweep of doubles. Junior Olivia Paradise and Hapuku won 8-0 at second doubles. Freshman Clare Palen and Knewtson won 8-4 at third doubles.

Five freshmen scored wins in the Toms' two MIAC playoff team victories.

Coach Ken Cychosz' Tommies will learn their NCAA playoff assignment on Monday May 10.
