W. Tennis blanks host Warhawks, in Sunday's region final

St. Thomas Women's Tennis swept the doubles matches and won their first two singles matches to close out Saturday's NCAA Regional playoff victory over UW-Whitewater indoors in Whitewater, Wis., by a 5-0 score.

The Toms won at Nos. 2-4 singles with Olivia Paradise and Monterey Knewtson to end the match and give the Tommies the program's first Sweet 16 appearance since 2003.

Nicole Snezhko and Jannah ElNemr rallied to win 8-7 (10-8 tie break) at first doubles; Knewtson and Claire Palen won 8-6 at third doubles; and Paradise and Brooke Hapuku won 8-4 at second doubles.

"We played our best match of the season," said St. Thomas coach Ken Cychosz. "Even through all of the adversity they were extremely prepared to have fun and win."

St. Thomas (14-3) remained unbeaten against D-III teams and tied a school record with its 14th win in a row.

The Toms play Sunday at noon against Kenyon (Ohio), a 5-0 winner over Grinnell. Whitewater finished 13-6.

St. Thomas is assured of no worse than a tie for ninth place nationally.

Track and Field

Tommie Track and field swept the men's and women's team championships for the ninth consecutive year. The two-day meet at Hamline University concluded Saturday, and marks the final conference meet for the Division I-bound Purple.

The St. Thomas men scored in all 22 events with five firsts and five seconds and scored 214.5 to top runner-up St. John's (135) by 79.5 points. Carleton (89) edged Gustavus (88) for third place. It was the 38th outdoor championship for the Tommies.

St. Thomas' Delaney McLoone had a hand in 30 points as she won the 100 and 200 and 4x100 relay as the Tommie women outscored Bethel by 18 points, 137-119, for another team crown. Gustavus (94) and St. Olaf (87.5) also had strong performances.

The Toms' only won four events and had five seconds but used depth to record the victory. It was St. Thomas' 36th women's championship in 39 seasons, including each of the last 15 in a row.

Softball

St. Thomas scored a 5-0 win over No. 19-ranked St. Olaf to move to Sunday's championship round and improve to 3-0 in the playoffs. The Oles came back to eliminate Bethel, and they will have to beat the Tommies twice on Saturday to win the playoff crown.
