Men's Soccer sharp in season-opening victory

Sophomore McRay Drong scored two goals to lead St. Thomas Men's Soccer to a 3-0 win at St. Mary's in a season-opening game Thursday night in Winona. It was the first game for the Purple in 516 days, dating back to the 2019 MIAC playoff title game.
All-America Halvor Houg converted a penalty-kick try in the 27th minute to give the Tommies a 1-0 lead. It was Houg's 16th career goal and eighth career game-winning goal.
The Toms outshot the Cardinals 15-0 in the first half and 23-4 overall, and also had a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.
Drong scored with 12 seconds left in the first half to provide St. Thomas some cushion, then scored again in the 51st minute.
Seven players made their St. Thomas debut, including Bennett Luttinen, who scored an assist, and Tucker Mann in goal, who had two saves in 71 minutes.
St. Thomas plays at home Saturday April 24 against St. Olaf.
