Redshirt freshman pitcher Duke Coborn threw a five-hit shutout with nine strikeouts to lead St. Thomas Baseball to Tuesday's 5-0 victory over visiting Macalester in game one of an MIAC twinbill at Koch Diamond.
Game two was suspended by lightning with the Toms leading the nine-inning game 5-2 after four complete innings. That contest will resume from that point -- possibly rescheduled for as early as this Thursday -- back at St. Thomas.
The Toms (9-3 overall, 4-0 MIAC) ran their winning streak to six. Coborn (1-0) is the sixth different pitcher to claim a mound victory in that nine-day span. He took his first college win in his second start. He walked only one and scattered five hits.
The Purple used two sacrifice flies and a steal of home plate to generate three of their five runs. Jake Porter had a double and a single; Sam Kulesa slapped an RBI single; and Avery Lehman had a single and a walk and scored twice. Kyle Halverson and Michael Fleischhacker had sacrifice flies.
Game two had a 75-minute lightning delay in the first inning. Play resumed and St. Thomas scored five runs in the second inning aided by five walks and two-run hits by freshman Max Moris and Porter. Mac had single runs in the first and fourth innings. The game was halted with more lightning and stormy weather moving in.
Among Division III teams with five or more games played, St. Thomas started the day ranked first in ERA (1.26) and second in strikeouts per nine innings.
