The first of 10 MIAC regular-season championships has been determined for 2020-21... and the first team in the winners' circle is St. Thomas Women's Tennis.

Coach Ken Cychosz' Tommies scored a 5-4 win over previously-unbeaten Gustavus in Sunday night's conference match, moved indoors to the Eden Prairie Lifetime Fitness courts. Theses teams came in unbeaten against D-III opponents and ranked Nos. 6-7 in the region poll.

The Toms secured just the program's second league title -- and it's first solo championship in 30 seasons. The 2016 Toms shared the MIAC regular-season title with Gustavus and Carleton.

En route to the team's 11th consecutive victory, St. Thomas swept the three doubles matches with freshmen Nicole Snezhko and Jannah ElNemr, Olivia Paradise and Brooke Hapuku, and Clare Palen and Monterey Knewtson.

Then freshman ElNemr and junior Hapuku won at Nos. 3-6 singles to secure the match victory.

The Toms, who started their season with three defeats to Division I teams, will enter the MIAC playoffs in May as the No. 1 seed.

"Everyone contributed to tonight's victory, securing at least one point.," Cychosz said. "This was a real team "W" for the women. We played tremendous doubles, and Jannah and Brooke were outstanding in singles, too. We set our sites now on the playoffs starting in 10 days."
