Hop and Pop: Softball gets home sweep

3/20/2021 6:44:00 PM | Softball

Kendall Hopkins tossed a two-hit shutout in game two and Tommie Softball slapped 20 hits on the day as it recorded a 12-4 and 8-0 sweep of visiting UW-Stout in non-conference play on a windy, sunny day at South Field.

The Purple reached the eight-run threshold in each contest, as game two ended in the fifth inning, and game two was halted in the sixth.

Stout (2-4) led onec on the say with a two0run first inning in the opener. But the Toms answered with three runs in their at bat and never looked back.

St. Thomas (3-1) played its first games at South Field in 673 days. That span extended back to May 17, 2019 Super Regional playoff victory over UW-La Crosse, with the 2020 home season erased by the Covid outbreak.

Sam Birling and Sarah Hudson had three hits on the day. Birling drove in two runs in the opener, then added a walk-off triple in game two to cap the eight-run win.

Megan Baniecke had two hits and also pitched into the fifth inning to get the pitching win in game one.

Hopkins walked five and fanned six in her first college complete-game shutout.

The Toms are scheduled to play UW-Eau Claire in a Monday doubleheader at South Field (2 p.m.).
