Watts up? Women get shutout win on ice

2/23/2021 9:21:00 PM | Women's Hockey

Sophomore goalie Kylie Watts stopped 17 shots for her first college shutout and visiting St. Thomas Women's Hockey ran its win streak to three with Tuesday night's 3-0 non-conference victory at St. Mary's.

The Tommies (4-1) used two goals in a 2:42 span of period two to forge a 2-0 lead. Freshman Alli Pitlick scored her first collegiate goal, and Alyssa Wallace followed soon after with a power-play score of her own. It was Wallace's conference-leading fifth goal in five season games and St. Thomas' fifth power-play score of 2020-21.

St. Thomas freshman Fiona Claugherty closed the game's scoring midway through the third frame as she converted a long shot from the center for a 3-0 lead.

The Cards (0-3-2) went 0-for-1 on power-play tries. St. Thomas has killed off 16 of 17 opponent power-play tries this season.

The Purple built a 34-17 advantage in shots on goal. Senior Maddy Fiedler ran her scoring streak to five games as she recorded one assist. Fiedler leads all conference players with seven points in five games.

St. Thomas is set to play a non-conference game against Concordia on home ice Wednesday night, then play at home Saturday against St. Mary's (2 p.m.) in an MIAC clash.
