Late scores are bright spots in Men's Hockey's 5-2 loss to Bemidji
12/3/2021 10:13:00 PM | Men's Hockey
St. Thomas Men's Hockey had its hands full Friday night on home ice in Mendota Heights against another quality opponent, this time facing CCHA second-place team Bemidji State. After falling behind 4-0, two late goals provided some consolation in the Tommies' 5-2 conference loss.
Sam Renlund scored his second career Division I goal, and Aaron Swanson recorded his first. Both came 2:54 apart in the game's final four minutes.
That provided St. Thomas its first two-goal scoring outburst in the same period in its last nine games, dating back to Oct. 23's home win over Ferris State.
Peter Thome stopped 18 of 22 shots in goal and helped kill off all three power plays by the Beavers (9-6 overall, 7-2 CCHA), who added an empty-net score.
The Toms (1-16, 1-10) went 0-of-4 on power plays but showed some signs of a breakthrough on offense over the last 40 minutes with 18 shots on goal.
"I thought we had some stretches where we were playing a really good brand of hockey, and we had some lapses in judgment that ending up being in the back of our net, and that was pretty much the game," Tommie coach Rico Blasi said.

"I thought we did some good things 5-on-5. I thought our penalty kill was good tonight. They hit a pipe, we hit a pipe. They made some plays when we made some errors in judgment. They are a good hockey team, and they are going to make you pay (for mistakes) like that. We have to clean up and be prideful in our defensive awareness. That's the bottom line.
"The lapses in judgment were fewer (than other games) but also ended up in the back of our net. We're understanding what we can and can't do. I thought we played hard again tonight, that's never been an issue for our team. I think we are closer (to a breakthrough) than maybe than we even think we are. We have to be a little more prideful, be more aware of our surroundings, and making sure we're making stronger plays and defend better. That all starts with good puck management, starts with an awareness what is going on around you. And everybody has be on the same page. If you can do that you can start rolling the other way, but it's easier said than done, and we have to continue to fight through that. I know our guys will be ready to go tomorrow."
The teams play Saturday again in Mendota Heights at 7 p.m.
