Women’s Basketball tests Omaha in Summit League opener

St. Paul, Minn. – The St. Thomas Women's Basketball team fell to Omaha, 61-55, after the Mavericks connected on 19-of-27 attempts from the charity stripe in the Tommies first Summit League contest.
After the first quarter of play, the score was tied at 14-14, despite St. Thomas converting on only 25 percent (2-of-8) of its shots from behind the arc and 40 percent (6-of-15) from the field. Grad student F Erin Norling led the scoring efforts with five points in the opening frame.
The Purple earned their first lead of the game off a jumper from senior F Kaia Porter at the 9:03 mark in the second quarter. After a pair of lead changes, St. Thomas opened up its largest lead of the game, 22-19 with 1:30 remaining in the first half. After a back-and-fourth 90 seconds, the Purple sustained a three-point lead, 26-23 heading into intermission.
Seven of the nine Tommies that saw the court in the first half made their way into the scoring column, led by sophomore C Kate Burns with six points.
St. Thomas connected on 41 percent (12-of-29) of its shots from the field and 14 percent (2-of-14) from behind the arc. The Tommies committed eight first-half turnovers which resulted in 10 points for the Mavericks. The Purple held the lead for 8:33 of the first half, compared to 4:24 for Omaha.
Three minutes into the second half, Omaha opened up a three-point lead of their own, 29-26, with a deep three-point shot as the shot clock expired. The Tommies answered with a three-pointer from freshman G Jade Hill to tie the game at 31-31 with five minutes remaining in the third quarter.
The Mavericks outscored the Tommies 17-10 in the third quarter to take a 40-36 into the fourth quarter. St. Thomas only connected on 4-of-14 of its shots in the third quarter, while Omaha made 5-of-10 of its shots.
Norling connected a three-point shot to open the fourth quarter and blocked a shot on the ensuing defensive possession to cut the Mavericks' lead to one point with 8:30 remaining in the game. Back-to-back three pointers from senior G Maggie Negaard brought the game to a 46-45 Omaha advantage with 6:46 to play.
Omaha was able to push its lead to four points, 51-47 with 3:30 to play. The Mavericks closed the game on a 10-8 run to earn the 61-55 win.
As a team, St. Thomas connected on 40 percent (23-of-58) of its shots from the field and 32 percent (8-of-25) from behind the arc. The Tommies attempted only two free throws to the Mavericks 27 free throw tries.
Individually, Norling led the team with 15 points, while Negaard poured in 10 points. Hill added nine points and Porter rounded out the leading scorers with eight.
The Tommies return to action Wednesday, as they host the University of Denver, tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. at Schoenecker Arena.
