Women’s Basketball blanks Northland College in first quarter, rolls to third win of the season

12/15/2021 8:52:00 PM | Women's Basketball

St. Paul, Minn. – The St. Thomas women's basketball team scored a season-high 92 points as it cruised to its second win in three games with a 92-19 victory over Northland College on Wednesday.

"This group has done a fantastic job of just really enjoying the journey and just investing in 'How do we continue to maximize what we are doing, who we are and how we play together and how we care for one another.' It's been a good experience," said Head Coach Ruth Sinn

"The biggest thing is (that) we continue to understand our identity, understand how we play together and understand how we can really give it our best shot. Right now it's just about leaving everything out on the floor and saying 'You know what, there's no more we can give.' That's what we keep striving for. You are seeing moments of it. We haven't gotten the consistency yet, but it's coming. It's coming. That's one of the things we are doing is to build that trust and that identity. It's a journey and it's fun."

The Purple used all 15 players on roster and 14 made their way into the scoring column as St. Thomas poured in a season high 92 points. All 15 players on roster played at least 10 minutes in the victory and no player saw more than 18 minutes on the floor.

The Tommies jumped out to an early 24-0 lead after the first quarter of play, after the Lumberjills went 0-12 from the field in the first quarter. St. Thomas connected on 10-of-22 of its shots from the field in the opening 10 minutes, including 2-of-9 attempts from behind the arc.

St. Thomas took a 54-7 lead into intermission being an 11-point first-half effort by freshman G Jade Hill and a 10-point effort from freshman C Jo Langbehn.

The Purple connected on 50 percent (22-of-44) of their shots from the field, including 29 percent (5-of-17) from behind the three-point line and held the largest lead of 47 points. 11 of the Tommies' 22 made baskets came off an assist in the first 20 minutes. 22 of St. Thomas' 54 points were second-chance points and 23 points were fast-break points.

The third quarter saw the Tommies outscore the Jills 20-6 extending the Purple's lead to 74-13 with 10 minutes remaining. St. Thomas connected on 8-of-19 (42 percent) of its field goal attempts in the third frame.

In the fourth quarter, St. Thomas connected on 8-of-16 of its shots from the field and added 18 points compared to six from the Jills.

As a team, the Tommies made 48 percent (38-of-79) of their shots from the field. St. Thomas out rebounded Northland an astounding 62 rebounds to only 17 from the Jills and forced 26 Northland turnovers.

The St. Thomas bench scored 60 of the team's 92 point, while 60 of the 92 points came in the paint and 35 of the points were scored on a second-chance effort.

Individually, Hill was one of three Tommies to net double-digit points, finishing with a game-high 13 points. Langbehn contributed 11 points, while Junior F Abby Mackenthun added 10 points and a game-high nine rebounds.

The Tommies return to the hardwood on Monday as they begin Summit League play at home against Omaha. Tipoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. at Schoeneker Arena.
