St. Thomas Women’s Basketball can’t overcome strong third quarter from Northern Iowa

12/1/2021 9:30:00 PM | Women's Basketball

St. Paul, Minn. – The St. Thomas women's basketball suffered a 102-62 loss at the hands of Northern Iowa in its home opener at Schoeneker Arena on Wednesday night.

"Today, we played against a very experience Northern Iowa team," said Head Coach Ruth Sinn. "We wanted to challenge ourselves so we were prepared for that level. The Summit League is a shooting league. We're going to really have to be prepared for that. The biggest thing is just take steps for that."

The Tommies trailed the Panthers 17-10 after the first quarter of play. Four of UNI's six made field goals in the opening quarter came from behind the arc. The Tommies outrebounded the Panthers 11-8 in the first 10 minutes of play.

In the second quarter, St. Thomas was able to heat up from the floor connecting on 50 percent of its shots from the field (7-of-14) and from deep (3-of-6). Just over one minute into the second quarter, the Tommies were able to pull within four points, trailing 19-15.

The Panthers came out in the second half and outscored the Tommies 29-9 in the third quarter to pull away from St. Thomas. The Purple kept up with the Panthers in the fourth quarter, as UNI outscored St. Thomas 26-23 to earn the 102-62 win.

As a team, St. Thomas connected on 22-of-63 (35 percent) of its shots from the field and 8-of-18 (44 percent) of its shots from behind the arc. UNI shot lights out, connecting on 37-of-70 (53 percent) of its shots from the field and 16-of-33 (49 percent) of its shots from deep.

Individually, Norling led the team with 19 points and 11 rebounds. She also added one assist and one block on the evening. Freshman G Jade Hill also contributed double-digit points, tallying 15 points on the night.

St. Thomas returns to action on Saturday as it travels to face Chicago State. Tipoff is slated for 12:00 p.m. in Chicago.
