St. Thomas Volleyball falls in four to South Dakota after winning first set

St. Paul, Minn. – For the second-consecutive day, the St. Thomas Volleyball Team won its first set of the day and hung tough throughout the match, but ultimately fell, 3-1, winning set one, 25-20 then falling by scores of 25-15, 25-13, and 25-32.
As a team, St. Thomas hit .219 in the set and recorded 48 kills with 20 errors.
Freshman Lauren Galvin paced the Tommies with 11 kills, eight digs and four service aces. Senior Carrie Rutledge added 10 kills and hit .307 on senior night. Senior Grace Anetipa added 39 assists in the contest.
St. Thomas won the first set, 25-20, behind a strong offensive effort in which it hit .385 with 13 kills and only three errors. Galvin led the offensive attack in the opening set posting five kills, three service aces and one assisted block.
In the second set, St. Thomas and South Dakota were tied at 11 before the Coyotes went on a 14-4 run to earn the second-set victory. South Dakota had the hot offensive hand in the second set, hitting .708 with 19 kills and two errors.
The Coyotes won the third set 25-13 to open up a 2-1 advantage in the match. Although they cooled off from the second set, USD still hit .300 in the set. Through the first three sets, the Coyotes outhit the Tommies .410 to .193.
In the third set, the two teams were tied at 14 before USD went on a 9-2 run opening up a 23-16 advantage before St. Thomas rallied back with a 7-0 run of its own to tie the fourth set at 23. The fourth set featured 13 ties and four lead changes. The Coyotes called a timeout with the score tied and went on an 2-0 run to win the set 25-23 and the match 3-1.
The Tommies finish their 2021 season with three-consecutive road matches beginning Thursday in Kansas City, Mo., against Kansas City.
