Toms call, Alexa answers for W. Hockey in loss to No. 2 OSU

No. 2-ranked Ohio State closed out a weekend sweep of St. Thomas Women's Hockey on Saturday in Mendota Heights, despite a impressive defensive stand by Tommie goalie Alexa Dobchuk.

The Eden Prairie, Minn., native and senior transfer set the Tommies' D-I record with 58 saves to help limit the damage in a 6-2 loss to the deep and dynamic Buckeyes (10-2 overall, 10-2 WCHA).

Dobchuk has been in goal for three complete games this season against Ohio State --  respectable losses by 6-0, 4-1 and 6-2 margins. In those contests se faced 167 shots and recorded 151 saves. Saturday's showing improved her season save percentage to .902 and moved her season total to 240 saves in seven appearances.

In Friday's 8-1 loss, the Toms were outshot 45-9. On Saturday, the Buckeyes recorded a 64-7 advantage. But St. Thomas hung around on the scoreboard, trailing just 4-2 after 40:00, thanks to Dobchuk's stingy play plus second-period goals by Luci Bianchi and Lauren Stenslie.

St. Thomas (4-7-1, 2-7-1) can find a lot of positives about its first dozen games in D-I. It heads into a bye weekend followed by a two-game home set against No. 1-ranked Wisconsin knowing that six losses have come against top-8 ranked teams in the nation.

Acting head coach Bethany Brausen said the underdog Tommies found a way to improve on what was a solid showing on Friday.

"It was a really good (team) response, they came out and played unbelievably well, in the first half of the game especially," Brausen said. "Any time you are playing one of the top teams in the country and you stay competitive like that, you're actually very happy overall with (those results).

"We thought 'Dobber (Alexa) was fantastic today. (Ohio State) had some unbelievable chances and their offense is as good as anybody in the country.  For (Alexa to stop) some of those chances, especially those second and third opportunities, the way that she competes, she's a lot of fun to watch."

Brausen praised the Tommies' poise and consistency over this early stretch of the season.

"We just talked to the team and we commended them on how for 60 minutes, you could think the score was 0-0, you'd have no idea (we were behind). They never change the way they play, and individually it's true, too. They give it 100-percent effort whether they are up by two (goals) or down by three. They continue to be the team we were hoping to see."
