Volleyball wins first set but falls 3-1 to South Dakota State

St. Paul, Minn. – The St. Thomas Volleyball Team won its first set of the match, 25-21, but lost the ensuing three by scores of 25-15, 27-25 and 25-15 to South Dakota State.
St. Thomas held its own against South Dakota State, forcing four sets and in the third set forced an extended set, but couldn't overcome a 14 ace match by the Jackrabbits and ultimately fell in four.
Freshman Lauren Galvin recorded a team-high 13 kills and recorded two solo blocks, three assisted blocks and seven digs. Senior Grace Anetipa recorded 34 assists in the contest. Defensively, senior Carrie Rutledge recorded 18 digs.
In the first set, the Tommies raced out to an 18-10 lead before the Jackrabbits went on an 11-3 run to cut the St. Thomas lead to 23-21. The Tommies were able to stave off the Jacks attack and win the first set, 25-21. Freshman Lauren Galvin posted eight kills in the opening set.
The Jackrabbits evened the match in the second set with a 25-15 win. The set was won from the service line as SDSU recorded seven service aces in the second set, while only posting eight kills.
In an extended third set, the Tommies posted a block party, recording six blocks in the set after recording a total of four in the first two sets. SDSU hit .190 in the set compared to .109 by St. Thomas, which proved to be the difference.
South Dakota State took the fourth and final set of the match 25-15 behind a solid hitting performance. The Jacks posted 17 kills and hit .433 in the set.
The Tommies return to action on Saturday as they host the University of South Dakota in the final home match of the 2021 season. The contest is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
