No. 2-ranked Ohio State Women's Hockey scored five goals over the game's final 20:20 on the clock en route to an 8-1 over St. Thomas in WCHA play Friday night in Mendota Heights.
The lone season losses for the Buckeyes (9-2 overall, 9-2 WCHA) have come against No. 1-ranked Wisconsin.
Friday's game was scoreless through 19 minutes before OSU connected with 37 seconds to go in the first period for a 1-0 lead.
Luci Bianchi scored her second goal of the season for the Tommies at 16:42 of the second period to pull the Purple within 3-1. OSU answered with a goal at 19:41 of the period, to take a 4-1 lead into the second intermission.
The Buckeyes added four third-period goals to pull away. On the night, the visitors outshot St. Thomas, 45-9.
Freshman goalie Saskia Maurer stopped 34 of 40 shots for the Tommies (4-6-1, 2-6-1).
St. Thomas coach Joel Johnson said the final score didn't accurately reflect his players' effort and performance.
"I'm excited with how we played," the coach noted. "We had some face off things we have to clean up, but either than that I'm OK. We have to clean up the goals against, obviously, but (Ohio State is) good. They're repetitive -- they go, they go, they go. We know that. They keep coming after you. They're hard to defend.
"We'll tweak our lines, go back and watch see what we could do differently (for Saturday). But I was OK with how we played. We didn't win, and I know score got a little lopsided, but I was proud of our (team)."
The teams play again Saturday at 2 p.m. to close the season series.
