Madison, Wis. – The St. Thomas Women's Basketball team made a strong Division I debut at the University of Wisconsin (1-0) on Wednesday. Despite falling 67-51, the Tommies (0-1) matched the level of play brought by this Big Ten opponent and showed that they are ready to compete in this new era. St. Thomas scored within one point in the first, third, and fourth quarters.
Head Coach Ruth Sinn on her team's first Division I game, "The enjoyable part about starting this journey is that we get to do it together. Prior to the game, the team talked about what they wanted to make sure we were on point and all in with. We knew we wanted to excel in passion, effort, energy, and attitude, and the girls did a great job of this. Even when we were down, those characteristics didn't waver. It was very intentional that we chose to begin against a Big Ten team because we wanted to find out what Division I is all about. This team was locked in, kept battling, and continued to find shots."
The Toms were dialed in and battled hard the entire contest. The Badgers have a dominate post, Sara Stapleton, that sophomore center Kate Burns and freshman center Jo Langbehn held to one point. Senior guard Amanda Pollard and freshman guard Jade Hill protected the perimeter well and prevented Big Ten All-Conference Player Katie Nelson from having catch-and-shoot opportunities.
The Tommies were sharp offensively and adapted well to Wisconsin's zone defense. They scored within one point in the first, third, and fourth quarters, and finished the game with 17 assists. Their ball movement helped them create great opportunities and made it challenging for the Badgers to defend them. Graduate forward Erin Norling led the St. Thomas offensive attack with 15 points. Fellow graduate forward Kaia Porter also finished in double digits with 13, The duo also led the Toms in rebounding with Porter grabbing a team-high seven rebounds and Norling grabbing six. Hill led the team with five assists.
St. Thomas makes their Division I home debut on Saturday, November 13th against Illinois State University (0-1). Tip-off is at 1:00 p.m.
